India has a plethora of places where unexplained mysteries are frequently reported. The small village of Kodinhi situated in the green folds of Kerala is one such place.
The Unexplained Mysteries of Kodinhi
Kodinhi is a small and seemingly unimportant village. You may completely bypass this village, never even noticing it. But if you ever decide to stride through its narrow and modest streets, you will feel as if your mind is playing nasty and cruel tricks on you. A splitting headache may follow, and you may feel as if your eye-sight is getting weird, because you see doubles of every individual you come across. Kodinhi has a population of about 2000 families.
What makes it so interesting is that almost every family seems to have a pair of twins. You may feel that this sleepy village is regular in all aspects. But it is still shrouded in unexplained mysteries. What makes it so mysterious is the sense of seeing doubles everywhere when you walk into the village. Indeed, you see doubles and triplets where ever you glance. Many sane people doubt their sanity due to this mind-boggling phenomenon. Of course, one or two sightings can be chalked off as normal twin statistics. But 220 pairs of twins and two sets of triplets clearly tip off the balance of the average twin births in a small village.
Statistics of Twinning Rate
Local doctor and twin enthusiast- Krishnan Shribiju claims that many of the twin births are not reported and the numbers are actually way higher than what is officially claimed. About 42 out of 1000 births are twin births here, which is way higher than the estimated rate of 6 twin births per 1000 births all over the country. Even more peculiar is the fact that the twinning rate is six times higher than the twinning rate of the Asian continent, which is known to have a very low twinning rate. This unusually high twinning rate has indeed piqued the interests of many researchers.
Causes of The Multiple Births in Kodinhi
The cause of this baffling phenomenon has not been unearthed yet. It still remains in the realm of unexplained mysteries. Women native to Kodinhi village still give birth to twins, even after getting married in far-off places. It has also been found that when women from other places are married into this village, also conceive twins.
The phenomenon of a large number of twin births has also been seen in the town of Igbo-Ora in Nigeria. In Igbo-Ora, researchers have suggested that the diet of the women may be the reason behind the multiple births. Though no codependency between dietary intake and twin births has been found, the researchers of the University of Lagos Teaching Hospital have observed that a chemical found in the Igbo-Ora women and the peelings of a widely consumed tuber accounts for the high level of multiple births. In Kodinhi, however, no such relationship is found since the residents’ diet are similar to the rest of the inhabitants of Kerala. This astounding multiple birth rates has baffled many scientists.
Many try to consider the genetic, biological and environmental factors behind the phenomenon. Since the effect is localized to the inhabitants of the village, genetic factor has been dismissed. Also, as the villagers are too poor to indulge in Artificial Insemination and other biological techniques, the biological factors have also been thrown out of the picture. A few doctors have tried to explain this phenomenon by saying that there may be chemicals present in the water near Kodinhi. This may be responsible for the large number of twin births, but it still remains unexplained.
International Exposure and Popularity
This bizarrely high concentration of twin siblings has finally managed to turn the international spotlight on Kodinhi. They’ve moved this case up in the ranks of the numerous unexplained mysteries in the world. A team of international researchers are trying to solve the unexplained mysteries behind the multiple births. Even after much research the fact remains obscured. It may possibly remain so in the future too. About 30 pairs of twins, along with their parents have formed an organization named “The Twins and Kins Association.” It is supposedly India’s first Twin organization which highlights the plights of twins in terms of economic and social needs. It also tries to focus on the unique lifestyle of twins and aims to bring the problems faced by their village to the attention of the public as well as the Government.
A common joke in this village is how easy it is to bunk classes here. One twin frolics about while the other one takes his or her place, without anyone suspecting anything! Well, be sure to visit this village which is unique in the literal sense of the word. Experience the strange and thrilling feeling of seeing doubles where ever your eyes fall upon, and don’t worry, you are not going insane, you are just witnessing a miracle of Nature.
